We will substitute mountain brome for fairway crested
wheatgrass as requested. However, we disagree with your request to delete
alfalfa. Since alfalfa is a deep-rooted species, up to 30 Eeet, it enhances the
quality of topsoil at depths by hosting mycorrhizal fungi. This in turn crea[es a
more favorable habitat for Future plant species reestablishment when the topsoil
is redistributed. In addition, the number of acres of topsoil stockpiles is
approximately 50. This is a very small area in relation to the total numbed of
acres that can be retopsoiled Erom our stockpiles, i.e., approximately 1,115 acres
at 10 inches. Thus the amount of volunteering which might occur from species
established at the stockpile surface would be insignificant. Therefore we do not
propose to delete alfalfa Erom our approved seed list.
ALso, if this change to our approved seed mix is approved, existing perennial
seeded topsoil stockpiles would not be changed. In other words, we would not
spray out fairway crested wheatgrass and replace it with mountain brome.
Please accept this correspondence as a request Eor a minor revision to our
permit (CO-010-81). The enclosed revised page to our permit addresses the pro-
posed change from fairway crested wheatgrass to mountain brome.
If you have any questions, please call.
Best regards, ) ~
J
H.
