Its purpose is to test
whether, through the application of fertilizer, the marble dust fines that make up the soils on the
sites to be revegetated can support the vegetation called for in our reclamation plan.
The area to be revegetated includes portions of the roads on the east slope of the quarry property.
As noted above, the soils on the road consist of marble fines generated in the cutting of stone in
the quarry that are dumped outside. Sierra collected a sample of this material and sent it to the
Colorado State University Soil, Water and Plant Testing Laboratory in Fort Collins. Along with
the sample, Sierra provided the Lab with the information on the seed mix called for in our
reclamation plan. Sierra requested that the Lab analyze the sample and provide us with a
recommendation for the fertilizers that might be added to the soils to allow the seed mix to
generate adequate vegetation for the planned reclamation. Attached is the Lab report which
recommended 40 pounds of Nitrogen, 60 pounds of PzOs, and 60 pounds of Kz0 per acre.
Sierra obtained a fertilizer mix and a seed mix from the COOP in Carbondale that is equal parts of
Nitrogen, PzOs, and Kz0}, Even though the Nitrogen portion is higher than the other two
ingredients, we were advised that the higher Nitrogen content would not effect the results. A ten
foot square site was selected just south of the generator trailer. The site was chosen because it is
very representative of the areas to be reclaimed. In this area, some fines are compacted, some are
on steep slopes mixed with larger stones, and some are on more level ground. Since all of the
azeas to be reclaimed get quite a bit of sun, it is not necessary to establish a test plot in a shady
area. The test plot area was fertilized and seeded according to the recommendations of the Lab
and as called for in the reclamation plan. The surface was lightly mixed with a hoe and rake to a
depth of approximately 3 inches and then saturated with water. There are no plans to touch the
site this season after this initial work so that we can see if a good cover of vegetation can be
established with minimal work.
