Smith
Department of Transportation
606 South Ninth Street
Grand Junction, CO 81501
RE: Hawk's Nest Coal Silo Demolition Project (C-81-016)
Concrete Disposal
Dear Mr. Smith,
of oho
ti'Y 4
<;b
o
.~.
r9 t6
Roy Romer
Governor
M ichael8 Long
Diviaon Diredoi
The Division of Minerals and Geology has selected a contractor to
demolish the Coal Silos at the Hawk's Nest Mine. The contractor,
Miners Inc., has devised a plan to bury the concrete material east
of the coal silos. This proposed borrow area is located along old
Highway 133. The proposed plan requires a trench roughly 14 feet
deep, 70 feet wide and 200 feet long.
The borrow area will only contain concrete from the coal silos and
some re-bar material. All other structures will be disposed off
site. The Division requires concrete material to be buried under
four feet of overburden. The road will be repaired in accordance
with DOT specifications outlined in your memo dated October 27,
1993.
The work is scheduled to commence in February. Due to the
scheduling of trains from the adjacent West Elk mine, it is
necessary to start the project as soon as possible. Miners Inc.
has stated that they have received oral permission from DOT to
construct the borrow area. The Division would appreciate written
consent to bury concrete under old highway 133 as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please do
not hesitate to call me at 866-3567.
Sincerely,
'J .
Erica S.
