United States Department of the Interior
IN REPLY REFER TO:
ES/CO: MS 65412 GJ
Mr. Ed Gardner
White Water Building Materials
P.O. This former gravel pit which was transferred to the Bureau of Reclamation and is
pending transfer to the BLM is still in the reclamation phase and has Russian knapweed growing
azound the perimeter of the pond. Russian knapweed is a noxious weed that must be controlled
within Mesa County.
The pond that was created by the extraction of gravel was stocked with endangered larval
razorback suckers in the spring of 2004. Because of the concern over the affect some herbicides
may have on endangered fish we request that no spray be allowed to come in contact with the
waters surface. This will require that any spraying done in the vicinity of the pond be done by
hand on days with little to no wind so as to limit the potential for spray entering the water. In
addition any spraying should be done when there is limited chance of rain washing the spray
from the plants into the pond. With these safeguards in place we believe there should be little
chance of exposure to the fish in the pond.
We appreciate the opporhrnity to comment on your proposed spraying. We would also request
that prior to spraying we be contacted so that if we plan to stock fish or otherwise work in or
around the pond we will be aware of your impending actions. Please contact myself or Rick
Krueger in our office at (970) 243-2778 if you have any further questions and prior to any
spraying.
Sincerely;
F
~~~ 'f111an R.
