SHELTON, Director
April 23, 1987
Mr. Dan Hadley
Kaiser Steel Corporation - Coal Group
102 South Tejon, Suite 800
Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903
RE: Current Status of Chimney Rock Mine - File No. C-81-023, Colorado Coal
Mining Company Mine No. 1, - File No. C-81-024, and Kaiser Exploration
Operations.
Dear Mr. Hadley:
On March 24, 1987, I met with you and Jeff Collins to discuss the current
status of the Somerset Mine, the Chimney Rock Mine, the Colorado Coal Mining
Company Mine No. 1 and the Kaiser exploration activity. I have sent you a
status report regarding the Somerset Mine in a separate letter. This letter
addresses the s atus of the other two mines and the exploration activity.
~himney Rock Mine \
~he-mi-n 1s currently in temporary cessation. this cessation began September
30, 1985 and was attributed to the exhaustion of coal reserves at the site and
denial of adjoining Federal coal leases,
The mine has affected 109.6 acres during its life of which 61.7 acres have
been reclaimed and 49.9 acres remain to be reclaimed. The areas remaining tc
be reclaimed include the last two cuts of the pit in the Revision No. 1 area,
the facilities area (including the pad and haul road within the Stollsteimer
Creek AYF), the haul road on the north side of Stollsteimer Creek, diversion
ditches and sediment ponds, and all buildings.
The mid-term review for the mine was
February 18, 1986. A question regar
was raised during the review. Also,
on-the-ground disturbance as related
and mass balance were posed.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street
forwarded to Chimney Rock Coal on
ling the adequacy of the reclamation bond
questions regarding the actual
to the approved post-mining topography
Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
