Edna Mine Vegetation Final Bond Release Monitoring 2005-2006
Total vegetative cover will be reported in absolute percentages from first hit
point-intercept data for each line-transect sample point. Relative vegetation
cover percentages will be calculated using the vegetation cover data subset for
each line-transect sample point.
Herbaceous Production
Herbaceous production will be collected using standard harvesting methods. A
rectangular quadrat of 0.5 square meters (i.e., dimensions of 1.0 meter by 0.5
meters) will be used to collect herbaceous production samples. Production
sample quadrats will be aligned at the sample point using one of two methods.
When no other vegetation samples are to be taken at a sample start point, the
quadrat will be centered over the sample start point. When production or woody
stem density samples are to be taken, the production quadrat will be positioned
by offsetting it 2 meters to the left of the sample start point at a right angle to the
line or belt transect orientation. Production quadrats will be aligned parallel to
the line or belt transect direction, with the 1.0 meter side being parallel to the
transect direction. Using this offset will minimize interference between cover,
production and woody stem density sampling activities.
After quadrat placement and prior to clipping all plant species present within the
sample area will be identified and recorded on the field data sheet. Yearly
production will be measured by harvesting the herbaceous biomass produced
within the quadrat. Herbaceous growth will be clipped as close to ground level
as practical.
A single herbaceous production sample will be harvested and processed for each
quadrat. Herbaceous production samples will include the include the following
plant life forms when present in the quadrat: annual graminoids, annual fortis,
biennial fortis, perennial graminoids and perennial fortis. Cacti, cushion plants,
succulents, subshrubs, shrubs, trees, designated noxious and targeted weeds
Habitat Management, Inc. 13 4/8/2005
