Edna Mine Vegetation Final Bond Release Monitoring 2005-2006
random grid will be used to select sample start points. Random points will be
selected within each mapped vegetation community that is to be sampled using
the following methodology:
1. A square grid will be created and overlaid on the composite sampling area
(i.e., areas to be sampled may not be contiguous, they may be comprised
of one or more subareas). The maximum number of potentially required
samples will be used to determine grid interval for each sampled area.
Extra sample points will be included for sample location problems
potentially encountered in the field during monitoring. Typically, 10% of the
maximum required number of samples points will be added to the
maximum sample population for each vegetation parameter sampled
within a given area.
2. Grid intervals will be custom fit based on the sampling area's size. The
total sample area is divided by the total number of sample points to
determine the average acres per sample point. The average number of
acres per sample point is multiplied by 43,560. The square root of this
product is derived to determine the appropriate grid spacing interval to the
nearest whole integer.
3. Random offsets for the grid's primary "X" and "Y" coordinates are
generated. The grid is randomly positioned over its respective sampling
area using these two random coordinates from a fixed reference point.
NOTE: By generating random X and Y offsets for positioning the grid,
every point inside the reference area is given an equal opportunity of
being chosen as a sample point.
4. To minimize edge effect influences on vegetation samples, grid
intersections that lie within 25 feet, or 1/4 of the grid interval distance
when the grid spacing is 100 feet or less, from the vegetation community
boundary will be eliminated from an areas potential sample set.
Habitat Management, Inc. 7 4/8/2005
