Underground Mlne Flre
located in an abandoned underground coal mine,
(2) miles southwest of Florence, Colorado, in
An abandoned underground coal mine fire poses a public health
and safety hazard to the community of Florence, Colorado.
Approximately seven (7) acres have been severely affected and
large areas of subsidence are now visible.
In an attempt to Ssolate the fire zone, the G.E.C. Coal Company
has excavated a 70-feet deep X 70 feet wide X 1,000 feet long
trench to the bottom of the coal seam. There is now evidence
that the fire is burning in the underground workings located at
the down-dip side of the trench. The fire is in immediate danger
of rapid expansion into the deeper recesses of the abandoned mine.
Proposal
The reclamation proposal for this pro,)ect calls for the following
actions to be taken:
1. Close the one portal that remains open into the mine workings
down-dip from the mayor fire area.
2. Drill the area down-dip to determine the zone of combustion.
3. Utilizing the existing base holes, pneumatically infect non-
combustible material into the mine voids. All voids will be
filled to the point of refusal in an effort to construct an
underground fire-proof barrier. Several bore holes will be
temporarily capped and will be utilized for temperature-
monitoring purposes; the remaining bore holes will be
permanently capped.
4. Remove the existing coal from the floor of the trench, follow-
ing by compartmenting non-combustible material Sn the trench
to a depth of a least six (6) feet above the exposed coal seam
and placing a compacted surface seal over the identified fire
zone on the down-dip side.
a
