To the best of my knowledge, Colowyo's utilization of Highwall
Mining Technology marks the first time that highwall mining has been undertaken within the
company and in the state. Mined holes depth of penetration, tonnage being produced, and a
host of other records are being established daily, with the outlook by all those involved
being that more good things are yet to come!
> A few of the highlights are as follows:
> * As of noon Saturday January 24th, three holes or entries have been mined with the
fourth underway. Depth of penetration for the holes has been 990', 1240', and 1140' - a
target depth of 1200 feet was projected.
> * Mining height and width is 6.5 feet high by 11.5 feet wide.
> One entry approximately 1200 feet deep is slated to be mined every 12 hour shift.
> * Approximately 200 holes are slated to be mined across the length of the East Pit
"E" seam.
> * Daily tonnage with two, 12 hour production shifts could range between 6500 -7500
tons per day. Number of production days per month yet to be determined.
> * Underground hole conditions (roof/floor/ribs) have been excellent with no
instability issues encountered so far.
> * Highwall conditions are very stable and frozen. Spoil conditions are very stable.
> * Methane concentrations and water inflow into the holes are non issues.
> * Coal quality is acceptable, with minor changes being implemented to optimize quality
and recovery.
> * Safety record has been outstanding to date for all activities associated with
machine mobilization, erection, troubleshooting, and coal production.
> * January winter weather conditions have been cold (single digit lows, Fahrenheit) but
1
