• U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR OFFICE OF SURFACE MINING RECLAMATION AND ENFORCEMENT NOTICE OF A DECISION AND AVAILABILITY OF BOTH A TECHNICAL ANALYSIS AND AN ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR SNOWMASS COAL COMPANY PERMANENT PROGRAM PERMIT NORTH THOMPSON CREEK MINES PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO The United States Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), has approved, with conditions, a 5-year permit for Snowmass Coal Company to continue mining coal at its North Thompson Creek Mine. The North Thompson Creek Mines underground coal mine is located in southwestern Pitkin County, Colorado, 7 miles southwest of Carbondale, Colorado. The total lease boundary area encompasses over 5,681.95 acres. The proposed permit area and mining plan will cover 3,176 acres, 131 acres of surface has been disturbed to date. Maximum mine production is about 500,000 tons per year. The life-of-the-mine operation is expected to be 20 years. Sections 1501.4(c) and 1506.6, notice is hereby given that Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD) has completed a proposed decision and a Findings of Compliance for the mining and reclamation plan (MRP) for the North Thompson Creek Mine, Pitkin County, Colorado. OSM has supplemented CMLRD's document with its own environmental assessment (EA). OSM's recommendation to approve Snowmass Coal Company MRP and the permit application with stipulations is in accordance with Sections 510 and 523 of SMCRA. OSM's analysis is that no significant environmental impacts would result from such approval.
