I wholeheartedly concur that P&M's outstanding work towards rapid and
high quality reclamation, as well as the willingness demonstrated by ou and your staff to work
with DMG to accomplish the task deserves to be recognized. As further commemoration of
your award, please find enclosed a photograph of Terry Crowner receiving the award from
Governor Romer and MLRB Chairman William Cohan.
This past summer, P&M completed most of the required reclamation at the Edna Mine. Work
completed included backfilling, regrading, topsoil replacement, seeding, and contour futtowing
of the final it at the Moffat mining area; all facilities areas; access roads; and the narrowing
of haul roads. All of the West Ridge area was seeded and contour furrowed. It is apparent to
DMG that P&M completed a great deal of quality reclamation work in a short amount of time.
In recognition of this, DMG was happy to nominate P&M to the Colorado Mining Association.
DMG believes P&M to be particularly deserving because of your additional efforts to work with
us when reclamation requirements were vague. As you are aware, significant areas of the
disturbance at the Edna Mine was initiated pre-SMCRA, and the associated reclamation plans
for these areas were not clearly developed. Some of these areas, such as the transfer stations
along the conveyor corridor, had very steep cut slopes with no material available for backfilling.
We appreciate y&M working closely with the Division to develop acceptable reclamation plans
for these areas. The resulting slopes are stable and blend well with the surrounding topography.
DMG also recognizes P&M's efforts to reclaim the facilities area pond, apre-law pit area. The
existing pit had very steep slopes which were highly eroded and had very little vegetation.
P&M's efforts to reduce the slopes and construct an armored channel along the former pit floor
greatly improved both stability and aesthetics in this area.
The Division wishes to commend P&M for it's efforts towards assuring timely and successful
reclamation. Your efforts will ultimately advance the cause of mining for all of us interested
in mining and mined land reclamation. Thank you for your continued dedication to successful
mined land reclamation in Colorado and, again, congratulations on your 1996 Mined Land
Reclamation Award.
Sincerely,
i~~C C~l,tiLi^-4v`
Susan J.
