represent an insignificant change in the matrix of these vegetation
types considering the ubiquitous extent of these communities in this
area and region of Colorado.
Specifically, the proposed revegetation plan has reduced woody plant
density in the greasewood and big sagebrush shrubland areas because
(1) the current density is far greater than an area in "good" or
"excellent" range condition and (2) reduced shrub density will allow
a productive herbaceous growth that will better support prudent live-
stock use and restore the value of the ecosystem to wildlife to a
degree not equaled for decades previous.
The above rationale also applies to the shadscale shrubland areas.
shadscale does not have a great value as either food or cover for
wildlife. The proposed plan, shrub patches amid herbaceous areas,
increases the value of the site to wildlife.
In the juniper woodland, where many woody species important as wild-
life browse are present, the proposed reduction in stem density has
not been applied to these species. In fact, for the most important
species, i.e., mountain mahogany, Utah serviceberry, skunkbrush, and
Gambel's oak, the proposed plantings will result in slightly reg ater
density of these species than currently exists.
12. MEANS FOR EVALUATION OF SPECIES DIVERSITY
This will be a matter for negotiation this date.
