D. Corley, Jr.
The Corley Company
P.O. Box 1821
Colorado Springs, CO B0901
Re: Section 24 Reclamation, GEC Minerals, GEC Strip, Permit No. C-81-037
Dear Dr. Corley:
I am in receipt of your letter of August 12, 1992 regarding changes to the
Section 24 project bid document. After meeting with Steve Renner and Catherine
Begej today, I believe that most of your requests can be accomodated.
The Division will amend the bid document to include removal of all residual
trash that can be directly attributable to GEC. Please realize that defining
"directly attributable" will be left to Ms. Begej to discern; however, I feel
confident that a majority cf your concerns regarding this particular item can
be resolved.
The Division will change the revegetation seed mix per your recommendations to
remove green Needlegrass and add an additional 1 lb PLS per acre of Western
Wheatgrass.
The Division will attempt to place four feet of non-toxic cover over the
Orphan Pit coal waste as you requested. Ho~never, if this amount of material
is not available on site, we do not anticipate stripping undisturbed areas for
topsoil to meet this requirement. The Division believes that a cover of less
than forty-eight inches could achieve revegatation success to the level
required for livestock grazing, espically in light of the reclamation succe r
or` the Canon National Prospecting Pit. The Division will, again, however,
strive to achieve this four foot cover depth request.
You ~.vill al~rtays be ~.velccme to comment on any new findinGS at the site that
would contribute to enhancing and expediting cur reclamation success efforts.
;Je must stress, ho~.vever, that funding for this portion of the GEC reclamation
project is limited, and must be prioritized with reclamation of the East Pit
kept in mind. We ~.+ould hone you would continue working with us toward
completing *.he Section 24 reclamation this year.
