4
County Road 29X. The investigator's comments cryptically say "no dumps remain from
the underground workings of Canon Black Diamond Mine. However debris from the
dumps is scattered throughout the site on both sides of County Road 29X." The Pioneer
Canon #2 was an underground mine east of the Double Dick. The investigator felt that the
portals from Pioneer Canon Mine were also concealed by spoils. The Double Dick
underground mine had two portals. The northern portal was concealed by spoils from strip
mining. The southern most shaft was 35' in diameter at the surface and the investigator
reiterated the comment about the Pioneer Canon #2 description about debris being
scattered throughout the site. This area corresponds to the coal waste dumped in the
drainage between the tipple and the orphan pit.
The Colorado Geological Survey had put together an orthographic aerial composite of the
7.5 minute USGS Rockvale quadrangle in 1971. This photo showed black waste piles
northeast of the tipple, in the drainage near the Black Diamond and also showed the shale
pile near the tie-across road to County Road 15.
CWB/yjb
M:\oss\yjb\cwb
