-/-
Ns the nine has oeen in operation since lyU2 much of the disturbed area
associated with the mine was affected prior to the effeciive date of the
Surface Mininy Control and Reclamation Act of 1y77 and the Colorado
Surface Cual Mining Recla~nation Act. Baseline envirun~nental factors were
nut ~neasured and nu topsoil was salvayed prior to disturbance.
Disturbances whidi have ueen conducted since the effective date of the
Act have peen penuitted and conducted in compliance with the Act and the
Reyulations. These activities include file Huobard Creek Ventilation Fan
#'2 facility and the 3 Dip Methane ueyas Wellfield. All other areas of
disturbance at the mine occurred prior to the effective date of file Act.
U.S. Steel has conducted a veyetative survey of unaffected land adjacent
to the surface disturded areas for the purpose of developing a
reclamation plan for the surface disturbed area. The surface will be
returned to the undeveloped land use classification which is the present
status of adjacent lands and the pre-inininy land use of the disturbed
area.
:~11 surfaces will oe returned to the approximate original contour (ADC)
witn two exceptions. Tyre Sear Creek and Hubbard CreeK ventilation
facilities will be oackfilled only to the extent practical given the fact
that these small facilities areas are pre-existing and cut into steep
slopes. A variance from .;UC has bean yranted in accordance with the steep
slope .pining provisions of the Kegulations (See Section XXII of this
Document). Per~nanent Waste piles will be blanded into the surroundiny
topoyraphy. The main ;nine access road will ce left in place following
mininy in order to provide access to the So~nerset Cemetery and Elk
Creek. Ttie powerline access road and powerline corridor will be
reclaimed.
It is anticipated that active ~nininy operations will continue for at
least 25 years. Reclamation operations will begin immediately following
the decision to abandon the mine.
