,_
Mike Long
Lowland Communities

-3- March 16, 1982
The majority of the lowland sampled stands were dominated by Cheatgrass and
annual forbs. The Diversity Standard for the lowland seed mix (Mix No. 2)
is based largely on the composition of stand 0140, the Sagebrush-Greasewood
reference area. The stand consists of 2 cool season grasses (POd sandbergii
and Agropyron smithii) and two forbs (Erigeron pumila and Erigeron engelmanii)
which contribute greater than S% relative cover. Sampled affected areas,
presently dominated by annual species, contain in most cases only 1 perennial
grass and no perennial forbs contributing greater than 5% relative cover.
Therefore, the diversity standard of 2 cool season grasses, and one forb
species which contribute greater than 3% relative cover would appear to be
applicable to areas reseeded to the lowland mix as well as the upland mix.
A number of shrub species have been included in the seed mix. The relative
importance (based on densitu valves) of any one woody species will not exceed
60o in the post-mining community.
/mt
cc: Fred Banta
