DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
D. Monte Pascoe. Executive Dneclor
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON Director
Richard D Lamm
Governor
T0: Mike Long
FROM: Dan Mathews ~7C~-,~~
RE: Species Diversity Standard - Deserado Mine
The Deserado permit application identifies eight major vegetation communities
that will be disturbed by mining activities. The reclamation plan includes
two separate, permanent seed mixes, based primarily upon depth of soil
replacement and topographic position followin_q mining. Seed mix No. 1 is
designated as the Juniper Woodland/Mixed Grass Upland/Sagebrush Grass Upland
mix. Seed mix No. 2 is the Mixed Grass Lowlands/Sagebrush Lowlands Mix. I
recommend that a single species diversity standard be applied to all reclaimed
areas at the mine.
Upland Communities
Below, I have ranked herbaceous species within the major upland communities
by relative cover. The dominant, subdominant and other major species are
relatively easy to discern. In addition to species composition, life form and
seasonality of the revegetated area is included in the diversity evaluation.
The sagebrush-wheatgrass (0011) community is the most diverse upland community,
and contains 2 perennial cool season grasses and 2 perennial forbs which
contribute in excess of 5% relative cover. The majority of the other upland
sampled stands contain 1 perennial cool season grass and 1 or no perennial
forbs contributing in excess of So relative cover.
For areas seeded with seed mix No. 1, based on the above criteria, I recorrmiend
the following diversity standard: At Least two perennial cool season grasses,
and at Least one forb, each [with a relative cover equal to or greater than 30.
Any 3 species combined should not exceed 80o relative cover, and no one species
should exceed 600.
Upland Communities
March 16, 1982
Sagebrush-Wheatgrass (0010)
Spp.
Li fe Form
Rel.
