ground surface for installation of the geomembrane
liner.
2. All sharp rocks, large stones, roots, vegetation,
and other foreign material will be removed from the
interior of the tailings impoundment area.
3. Any remaining surface irregularities will be
smoothed out, and a layer of compacted decomposed
granite will be placed on the bottom and sides of the
tailings impoundment area.
4. An anchor trench 6 inches wide by 12 inches deep
will be dug with a backhoe around the inner perimeter
of the tailings dam to hold the edge of the geomembrane
liner. This trench will be at least 1 foot from the
interior slope of the tailings impoundment area.
5. A polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic liner with a
minimum thickness of 20 mils will be placed over the
prepared ground surface in a manner that assures a
minimum of handling.
6. The geomembrane lining will be closely fitted and
sealed around inlets, outlets, and other projections
through the lining.
7. The geomembrane liner will be sealed to the
vertical sections of the water decantation pipe with
separate patches of liner having a minimum width of 8
inches around the lap hole. The hole in the patches
will be smaller than the diameter of the vertical
sections of the pipe and will be stretched over the
pipe to form a flange.
8. Any portion of the geomembrane lining that is
damaged during installation will be removed or repaired
by using an additional piece of lining material.
9. Lap joints will be used to seal the panels of PVC
together in the field. Lap joints will be formed by
overlapping the edges of the PVC panels a minimum of 2
inches.
10. The contact surfaces of the lap joints will be
wiped clean to remove all dirt, dust, or other foreign cu`'
materials. A 1/2 inch wide bead of cold-applied vinyl ~~•qq~
to vinyl bonding adhesive will be applied to the ~~1
contact surfaces of the joint areas before the two ~ir~
surfaces are pressed together and any wrinkles are ~~~~
smoothed out.
11. Sand bags will be used to keep the geomembrane
liner in position during windy conditions prior to
-2-
