Grand Mesa Dr.
Cedaredge, CO 81413
RE: Hawk's Nest Mine (C-81-016)
Refuse Disposal Area
Dear Mr. Bertram,
~~
I~r~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Gnvenuu
Ken Salazar
Execulrve Direct ur
m.c hael B. Long
Dwismn Director
The Division of Minerals and Geology is currently conducting
reclamation activities at the Hawk's Nest Mine. The operator,
Western Slope Carbon, Inc., failed to meet regulatory requirements
for an extended period of time. This failure to comply resulted in
revocation of the mining permit and forfeiture of the reclamation
performance bond being held by the Division.
One of the remaining reclamation tasks at the Hawk's Nest Mine
involves reclaiming the refuse disposal area located adjacent to
the North Fork Landfill in a part of the N1/4 SEi/4 and W1/2 NE1/4
Sec. 28, T. 145, R. 92W of the 6th P.M. Delta County, Colorado.
Delta County Board of Commissioners purchased the property in 1988
with the intent of operating the additional area as a solid waste
landfill. Recent conversation between the Division and Delta
County reveal that the County is using the gob material in the
refuse pile as an intermediate cover in the existing landfill
operations. Both parties agree that reclamation of the refuse pile
by the Division is not warranted at this time due to the additional
disturbance created by operations at the landfill.
The Delta County Health Department has agreed to reclaim the Hawk's
Nest refuse pile area once the gob is no longer used at the North
Folk landfill. This reclamation activity would commence once the
landfill is closed and the gob material is no longer needed.
Reclamation would involve reshaping the refuse pile, placement of
subsoil and topsoil to a depth of four (4) feet over the refuse
material and seeding the associated disturbance.
