~. • EGOLOGSE` I r£.~, :. „_ _`_, • • III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
DEC : - 1919
~~~ "
PAV/NG COMPANY
POST OFFICE BOX 229, BOULDER, COLORADO 80302 PHONE: (303) 444-2151
December 3, 1979
tdr. Alan Whitaker
Colorado Division of Wildlife
6060 Broadway
Denver, CO 80216
Dear Mr. Whitaker:
Flatiron Paving Company has applied to the Mined Land Reclama-
tion Board for a permit to mine coal at the Bourg Mine in Jackson
County. On August 14, 1979 Mr. Clait Braun of your division wrote
a memo to Peter Barrows making suggestions of ways the company could
mitigate the impact of the mining operation on the sage grouse in
the area. Flatiron has incorporated the following suggestions in its
permit application:
1) haul road speed maximum 30 mph;
2) no activity before 7 am or after 7 pm from March
20 to May 20;
3) revegetation with native forbs, grasses and big
sagebrush;
4) fencing of mine area to exclude livestock but allow
access to deer and antelope;
5) keep buildings, roads, mining as far from Denmark
strutting ground as possible;
6) no employee trespass near strutting ground, especially
during breeding period.
7) wildlife access to ponds on mine site if water is
potable.
Flatiron could not address the prefered location of the haul
road since that designation was BLM's perogative. Flatiron did not
plan development of a wet meadow because the MLRB staff felt that this
was not practical.
The only recommendation left is No. 6 of the memo dealing with
fertilization of BLt4 land near the mine site. Flatiron does not wish
to be involved in this program:
1) It involves design and funding of a research project,
and as such, it is not a known mitigation for sage
grouse.
