Division
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Mr. Mathews:
At the request of Peabody Coal Company, our archaeologist
reviewed the results of mitigation activities conducted at site
5RT118. The site, containing rock art panels, is located near
the proposed permit expansion boundary of the Peabody's Seneca
II-W Mine. Though the site lies outside of areas proposed for
direct disturbance, concerns about the potential impacts from
blasting on the rock art were identified.
Peabody developed and received approval to implement a mitigation
plan to protect the site from mining related impacts. As a
result, the site was re-recorded with the rock art fully
photographed (color and black/white), drawn to scale, and
described. Additionally, a construction limits boundary has been
posted around the site to further protect not only the rock art,
but the possible cultural deposits at the cliff face from
potential impacts.
Based on review of submitted documentation, our archaeologist
believes that Peabody has properly implemented the approved
mitigation plan, and that the full recordation of the site's rock
art, coupled with site avoidance, adequately protects site
SRT118. At this time, no additional work at the site is
recommended.
Should you have any questions, please call Foster Kirby,
Archaeologist, at (303) 844-2786.
Sincerely,
%"~ ~'`~~
Paul Heitzenrater
Chief
Biological Sciences Branch
cc: Jim Green, CSHPO
