Long
Division Director
RI;: Your Request for Information -Status of Castle Concrete ~ Snyder
(Fife No. M-77-2IOj and Pikeview (File No. M-77-211) Quarries
Per your request, I have reviewed the status of the Snyder and Pikeview Quarries, which are both
operated by Castle Concrete. Following is a brief synopsis of recent activities for these sites.
Snvder Ouarry
The Snyder Quarry has been in a period of reduced activity over the past couple of years, however,
Castle Concrete is planning to increase the mining activity at the site this year (2000). Upon
contacting Mr. Rick Pazaday of Castle Concrete, I was informed that they anticipate crushing and
hauling material out of this quarry almost daily during the upcoming summer and fall (the starting
date was not mentioned). No indication was given on how long this increased activity would last,
but it was clearly in response to market demand.
During the inactive period a small amount of mining took place in the developed workings, but the
primary activities were storm water management work along with limited reclamation and
reclamation maintenance. Vegetation and topsoil stripping have also occurred in the West Ridge
Area, in preparation for the next mining phase, along with some internal material movement to
improve the site drainage.
Attached to this memo is a copy of the 1997 Annual Reclamation Report (ARR), which summarizes
the most recent significant activity and details some of the reclamation monitoring. e
inspection conducted at this quarry verified the information contained in the 1997 A did not
identify any problems or violations.
Pikeview Ouarry
The Pikeview Quarry, in contrast to the Snyder Quarry, is in full production with some 800,000 to 1
million tons of crushed rock produced last year. The quarry was in full compliance with the
approved plan during the last scheduled inspection, and the most recent reclamation report indicates
little change since that time,
