C i
h'
pad, a leak from the pit percolated through the pad to the fill side and down a dry wash. A
uantity, estimated to be approximately 6,000 gallons, was released to Piceance Creek just
d ... _. .
"stream of 1fie American Soda access roa anssing. This location is approximateiy mile _
marker 28 on Rio Blanco County Road 5. - -
Once observed, the flow from the leak was diverted to an earthen sump and collected. The
flushing activity of the well began at about 2 p.m. on September 28, 2000, the first
observation of the release was made shortly before 5 p.m. on September 28, 2000. The flow
was diverted to containment by 5:20 p.m. Water collected in the containment sump totaled
approximately 9,000 gallons. The approximate 6,000 gallon quantity estimated in the release
was obtained by a simple calculation of the volume of water used in the flush tank, 15,000
gallons, minus the volume of water collected at the containment sump, 9,000 gallons.
A sample of the released liquid was collected and sent to an EPA certified lab for analysis. In
addition, a sample was collected from Piceance Creek just down stream of the release location
at a small irrigation diversion`~iam, These results will be forwarded once they are received.
American Soda has implement mitigation practices including use of a synthetic liner in all future
drilling pits and the drilling contractor will be making regular and frequent observations of each
pad throughout the day to be recorded in the supervisor log at the end of each day. The sail
path from the release is~eing excavated to a depth necessary to remove any residue. Any
storm water runoff that may occur while clean up is occurring will be captured in the lined
containment sump until the clean up activity is complete.
Flow conditions in Piceance Creek and the quantity and origin of the release water are not
anticipated by American Soda to result in any harm to aquatic life, vegetation, animals, or
humans.
A variety of government agencies, area landowners, and other relevant parties have been
notified.
