Plains Sharp-Tailed Grouse Study
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Castle Rock Ouarry - e'-M
The Plains Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) of the eastern slope has
continued to decrease in population size, as its habitat has been encroached by human land
use. Around the Castle Rock Quarry area, historical lek sites exist approximately 3.5 miles
to the southwest and 1.5 miles to the southeast. Historical sightings of the Sharp-tailed
Grouse have occurred in Sections 28 and 33 of the Castle Rock Quarry property. However,
these sightings are approximately 8 years old (Personal Correspondence, Mr. James Barrett,
Centennial Materials, Inc.). There is concern that this grouse subspecies will continue to
decrease in population size as land use patterns change.
The purpose of the present survey was to evaluate the potential for the presence of the Sharp-
tailed Grouse within the Castle Rock Quarry property. This was accomplished by conducting
a field survey consisting of three activities:
1. Identification of potential lek sites,
2. Ground survey of potential lek sites for displaying grouse or grouse sign, and
1

I
1
t
1
1
3. Field survey with the use of binoculars znd Bionic Ear and Booster to observe
and/or record Sharp-tailed Grouse calls or display sounds.
McClain Pit -American Geological Services. Inc.
American Geological Services, Inc. was contracted by Centennial Materials, Inc. to conduct
a Plains Sharp-tailed Grouse survey of the McClain Pit at Franktown, Colorado. This survey
was conducted following [he guidelines set forth in the Colorado DOW memo of February 9,
1993 from Dave Weber to the Mined Land Reclamation Division, and subsequent phone
conversations and meeting with Mr. Weber.
The objectives of this investigation were to determine if Plains Sharp-tailed Grouse are using
the area in and around the McClain Pit for breeding grounds. If breeding grouse were
observed, the DOW was to be immediately notified. The survey was conducted during the
period of April 1 through May 15, 1993.
en~jneering-environmental Management, Inc. 1 7uly 12, 1995
