the project, Water from the ranch will be piped to the site
for use, no water will be taken from the Rito Seco. The
pipeline for transporting the Columbian Ranch water has
already been constructed. All process water at the project
will be recycled and will not be discharged to the creek or to
the ground water.
7. Will wetlands be disturbed by the project?
An expert on wetlands evaluated the disturbance areas for
wetlands and found that the operations would have only minor
temporary effects on any areas classified as wet:lands. In
addition, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Agency
with authority to protect wetlands, performed an independent
evaluation which showed the same results.
e. What affect will the mine have on wildlife and cattle?
We have taken great care to ensure that wildlife and cattle
will not be harmed by the mining operations. All water in
open areas of the mine will be safe for drinking bbl cattle or
wildlife. All cyanide solutions will be stored in tanks in a
secure area and wildlife and cattle will be unable to get to
these solutions. The entire site will be fenced k>y a local
contractor who is currently working on this fen~:ing. The
fences being constructed will allow free access t.o wildlife
and provide drift for cattle and horses. The fences are in
place to ensure that the grasses planted during and after
mining will have a chance to establish.
9. Why does the mine need to us® cyanide and does it pose a
threat to San Luis?
Cyanide is an industrial chemical that is necessary to free
the gold from the ore we mine. When used in controlled
conditions such as mining, cyanide does not pose a threat to
its users or the neighbors. Here are some important facts:
a) All cyanide solutions will be stored in tanks i.n the mill
area. The tanks are made of heavy steel and are located
on a concrete pad. The dilute solutions used in the mill
area are continuously recycled. No toxic cyanide
solutions can escape the mill area.
b) There have been no recorded fatalities in the United
process we will be using. Phillip M. Hocker, ~~ne of the
experts for the mine opponents, admitted in a recent
article in Clementine that "this is a remarkak~le record
and a credit to the care and training of many users and
the manufacturers of cyanide..."
