sediment movement and provides a variety of microsites for seedling establishment.
Placement of mulch will also eventually increase organic matter content of the surface
soils.
Completion of slope constnrction in this area is planned in 2003. This will
coincide with completion of a new wallboazd plant recycle system that will handle all the
reject fill material. Completion of topsoiling and seeding is then planned shortly
thereafter.
Summary
Reclamation efforts to-date at the Eagle Gypsum Mine have produced tangible
results and have also provided valuable experience for future success. The company will
continue in this mode with completion of reclamation in the "Old Mine Area". It needs
to be noted that equipment access and weather limitations will be factors affecting this
completion. Access to Area "B" in particular will be slow and time consuming due to the
"tight quarters" nature of the work place. Area "B" will take the most time and effort to
complete due to this space and access constraint. Slope construction cannot be
accomplished during the cold winter months when frost is in the ground. It is dangerous
to work track dozers on slopes with frost conditions. The same caveat holds true in wet
muddy conditions where track equipment can slide or bog down. The safety constraint is
viewed as the main item of concern here, but there is the additional fact and concern that
slopes cannot be adequately compacted in wet or frosty conditions. Despite these
constraints, full reclamation of the "Old Mine Area" is planned to be completed within
the next five yeazs.
I hope this update presents an adequate review of accomplishments and plans for
completion of reclamation. The remaining work is neither extensive nor complicated -
but it will be time consuming and intermittent due to the constraints mentioned. Please
call me if any further clarification is needed.
Yours very truly,
,.
~~~~~ ~~
Stephen A. Onorofs ie
Mine Manager
cc.
