The
work involved cutting a road around the toe of the existing
stockpile so that the hot coal could be removed and taken to a
storage area immediately south of the stockpile. During this
process a portion of ditch 5-D1 was filled in and it will be
cleaned out as soon as the road is no longer required. Presently,
the ditch has seen minimal disturbance and can be repaired
immediately with the use of a backhoe. The amount of coal placed
in the ditch was less than I described to you over the phone. I do
not believe that placing of coal in the ditch. will result in any
environmental problems. The loader did have to drive through a
portion of the ditch adjacent to the overland belt, and this area
will be dressed up within the next day or two. Strata bales will be
placed downstream of where the ditch was driven through to minimize
any impacts. I believe this will take care of any short term
concerns.
Empire anticipates that it may be necessary to use this road over
the next 30 days in the event additional hot spots may be
encountered. However, during the interim period when the road is
not needed, the ditch will be reestablished so that i_t can function
as designed. If additional hot coal is removed from the stockpile
it will be placed in the above referenced storage area. In the
event that additional room is needed the SAE to the= south of the
stockpile will be utilized. Access to this site will be gained by
blading a ramp down to it from the existing storage area.
Hopefully, this site will not be needed.
