Depi. of Nawrai Kesources
I have recently been informed of a most disturbing turn of events
that will affect many environmentally oriented individuals and
organizations in the State of Colorado, especially those involved
with Mined Land Reclamation.
Colorado Mountain College upper management has recently decided to
propose cancellation of their Environmental Protection Technology
program. This two year vocational program, offered at their Lead-
ville, Co., Timberline Campus, has been in operation for nine years.
I can personally attest for the success of the program and the high
quality of instruction and personnel they are graduating. I have
hosted five summer practicum students over the past years who have
allowed us great gains in reclamation technique and execution at
Genstar's Coaldale Cypsum Mine Operation in Western Fremont County.
The EPT program and the people involved in the program have been
instrumental in developing what I feel is a premier reclamation and
environmental control program for a small mine operation in the State
of Colorado.
A 1980-1982 program review for EPT showed exceptional placement (86%)
of graduating students, which I ti~ink is phenomenal considering Lead-
ville's economic plight and translates into real need for this type of
program. CMC upper management is justifying their decision on drop
in enrollment in the program, which is currently down 50%, due mostly
to economic recessionary reasons, location, and lack of a recruitment
program which is just now getting started by local College officials.
I am writing to you to request that you write a letter to the president
and vice president of Colorado Mtn. College, voicing support for the
continuation of this excellent program and to send copies to the
CMC governing members. Your key position in the Mined Land Reclama-
tion Division may carry some extra weight and hopefully will help to
MANUFACTURERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF FLINTKOTE ROOFING AND GYPSUM PRODUCTS
