• GOLDEN EAGLE NESTING
Two adjacent golden eagle nests have been found on a cliff in SW%4 SE'/4 Section 7, TSN,
R87W; less than 1000 feet from the Yoast Mine permit boundary (Exhibit 1). The northern
most of those nests was active in 2002. Although no chicks were seen, the behavior of the adult
on the nest and presence of mutes on the nest rim suggested that very young chicks were present.
SANDHILL CRANE ACTIVITY
During 2002, two active sandhill crane nests were found, one in the northern portion of
the Yoast permit area, and the other approximately one mite southwest of the permit area. The
northern nest (NW'/a NE'/a Section 8, TSN, R87W) was located among cattails (Typha spp.) at
the upstream end of a shallow mine reservoir. The other nest was on a cattail hummock in the
shallows at the end of a smati reservoir located in NW'/ NW'/< Section 31, TSN, R87W. Cranes
were also observed or heard on several other occasions in early May. On the morning of 1 May,
one sandhill crane was heard calling from the direction of Nofstger Zeigler Reservoir in NE%<
Section 9. Later that morning, one crane was observed foraging along a small draw near the
reservoir. Biologists also heard a crane calling from NW'/a SE'/< Section 29. On 4 May, two
sandhill cranes were seen walking at the edge of a small reservoir in NE'/a SE%a Section 6.
u
200? Yoari Mine Wildlilc ~kmito~ing Page K
