This type of channel would be uncharacteristic of those types associated with <br />an alluvial fan and would probably fail over the long-term. It would not <br />provide the channel stability that a "B" channel type would provide in this <br />situation. <br />In addition, because of the steepness of the alluvial fan, designing a channel <br />to prevent lateral adjustments would be difficult, as that is what a channel <br />flowing across a fan typically does over time. In order to reduce the risk of <br />losing the "C° channel type during runoff, the lower portion of the current <br />channel would have to be utilized as an overflow channel. A °hard <br />point/spillway" would be installed using a gabion/rock structure where the new <br />channel takes off from the existing channel. This is intented to prevent any <br />downcutting, resulting in the abandonment of the new channel. However, this <br />will be an art ifical looking structure, and could potentially fail and result <br />in the stream returning to its original channel. <br />The over-all affects of this alternative would be similar to those described <br />under Alternative 2, except for that part of the mainstem above the confluence. <br />It is expected that this type of channel configuration would not hold over the <br />long-term and the channel type described under the preferred alternative would <br />provide longer lasting stability to the system. <br />IX. Threatened. Endaneered and Sensitive Species <br />A Biological Evaluation was completed for TES species on March 15, 1996, <br />and it was determined that none of the listed species, or their habitat, <br />would be adversely affected by the proposed action. A copy of the <br />Biological Evaluation is attached to this Environmental Assessment. <br />X.
