1
1
Production
' Total herbaceous production for the Meadow vegetation type
averaged 157.1 g/m2 or about 1,400 Ibs/acrei.' Production was primarily
' perennial graminoids with western wheatgrass averaging 115.3 g/m2. Other
important producers basically corresponded to cover values: Agassiz
bluegrass 113.1 g/m21, green needlegrass 19.4 g/m2), sleepy grass 15.5
g/m2), blue grams (5.4 g/m2), and sand dropseed (2.0 g/m2). Forb produc-
t Lion averaged 3.7 g/m2 and annual graminoid production was only 0.1 g/m2.
Broom snakeweed, a subshrub, averaged 0.3 g/m2. See Table 4.
' Shrub Density
Total shrub density in the Meadow vegetation type was low,
averaging only 0.3 shrubs/50 m2 or about 23 shrubslacre. ~'lSee Table 5.1
' Rubber rabbitbrush was the only shrub present in this vegetation type.
Average height for this shrub generally ranged from about 50 to 120 cm.
' Trees
Because very few trees occurred in this vegetation type, each
' individual was noted by species. The majority of these occurred along
the intermittent drainage of Delagua Canyon. These included 33 box-
elders (Area negundol, 15 narrowleaf cottonwoods (aopJ.lue aagua#i~oAio),
12 plains cottonwoods i/oopu(ua de-(#ofde~), 9 elms IU.lmu~ sp.), and 2
' ponderosa pines I/oinu~ pondeaoaol. The elm trees were assumed to have
been planted by residents of the old town of Delagua earlier in the
century.
' 3.2.2 Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Complex
The Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Complex occurred on moderately
' steep slopes and ridge tops of the permit area, occupying about 153 acres
of affected area ind a total of 845 acres of the permit area. Soils were
shal)ow and relatively rocky. The dominant species in this vegetation
type was pinyon pine 1%anua edu.(i~l while one-seed juniper I'funipeau~
' monoap¢amal was subdominant. Two phases were included in this vege-
tation type: an oakbrush phase occurred on north- and northeast-facing
slopes, occupying about 3 acres of affected area and 104 acres of the
permit area, and a ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir 1/oaeudo#~ugo men#~.ieei+)
phase occurred on the higher ridge tops in the southeast corner of the
permit area occupying about 44 acres of the permit area, but none in the
' affected area.
These phases were small in area and contained elements
of the pinyon-juniper woodland. The oakbrush phase exhibited a lower
' tree density and a more strongly developed shrub layer. The ponderosa
pine/Douglas-fir phase was evidenced by a relatively closed canopy of
tree cover of various species. The entire Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Complex
' was sampled as one unit.
1
-8-
