2.8 SAMPLE ADEQUACY
e
SamFle adequacies for cover, prcduction, and density were cal-
culated for each vegetation type. The sample adequacy formula is as
follows:
' t=sz
nmin _
(dx)
' where n =
min minimum sample size
t = t value for 2-tailed test at 90~ confidence for herbaceous
vegetation types ft = 1.645) or 80~ confidence for woody
vegetation types It = 1.282)
s = sample standard devia tion fn-1)
d = desired detectable ch ange in the mean (0.1I
' x = sample mean
' 2.9 TIME OF SAMPLING
All sampling was completed during the first two weeks of August 1984.
t 2.10 AGENCY COORDINATION
' David Johnson, Western Resource Development 1WRD) met.with Mike
Savage of CMLR the week of 9 July 1984 to review CMLR's vegetation
stipulations for the Trinidad Basin Mine. On 15 July 1984, WRD, per
' the consent of Trinidad Basin Mining, submitted a vegetation sample
plan designed to address CMLR stipulations.
On 1 August 1984, David Johnson, David Buckner, and Richard Clark
' all of WRD again met with Mike Savage. The vegetation sampling program
for the Trinidad Basin Mine was reviewed and discussed. This program
was aproved with one modification. Because extensive portions of the
Pinyon-Juniper N;oodland Complex were previously mined, it was decided
that the remaining unaffected areas of this vegetation type would be
sampled as an extended reference area. This sampling strategy precluded
sampling a corresponding affected area while the extended reference
' area would be the reclamation standard.
On 7 August 1984, David Johnson informed Mike Savage that portions
t of the Meadow vegetation type were actually seeded, introduced bunch
grasses. It was agreed that these areas would not be included as part
of the Meadow to be sampled. Furthermore, since the remaining portions
of the predominantly native Meadow included many disturbances from
' historic mining operations Ie.g., coal spoils, home sitesl, it was
1
-4-
1
