In 1986, however, mining began to <br />encounter ground water resulting in this water being pumped to the surface and <br />discharged to the west sediment pond. It is hypothesized that mining <br />operations may be dewatering an overlying perched aquifer, which are <br />relatively common within the Menefee Formation. It is possible, however, that <br />some inflow from the Pine Gulch drainage may be occurring. Continued <br />observation and monitoring will help to determine the source of this inflow. <br />To date, the amount of water being discharged to the west pond has been <br />minimal. If, however, mine dewatering causes either of the two sediment ponds <br />to discharge, National King Coal has committed to monitoring the parameters <br />listed in Table 2 within 24 hours after pond discharge at the alluvium well in <br />Hay Gulch. Surface Water Hydrology - Rules 2.04.5, 2.04.7, 2.05.3(4), 2.05.6(3), and <br />J <br />Information on surface water hydrology can be found in Sections 2.04.7, 2.05.3 <br />and 2.05.6 and Maps C-4 and C-9 of the permit application. <br />The surface facilities of the King Coal Mine are located in a small ephemeral <br />drainage basin which is tributary to Hay Gulch. The permit area and underground <br />mining extending to the south of the surface facilities and underly another small <br />ephemeral drainage basin which is tributary to Pine Gulch. Pine Gulch flows into <br />Hay Gulch approximately 4 miles below the permit area. Hay Gulch is a tributary <br />of the La Plata River and their confluence is located about 8 miles downstream <br />(southwest) of the King Coal Mine. <br />-9- <br />
