t resources inventory was performed on the proposed construction areas by
Brad Noisat, representing Science Applications, Inc. of Boulder, Colo-
' rado. This work was conducted under the authorization of Federal
Antiquities Permit 80-CO-139 and State Antiquities Permit 80-17. This
' final report is submitted by Science Applications, Inc. in compliance
with the Antiquities Act of 1906, The Historic Preservation Act, 1966,
' The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Federal Executive Order
11593, and the Archaeological and Historic Data Preservation Act of
1974.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT AREA
' The. project area .is located on south facing ridges and slopes which
lie between Thousanc~.Acre Flats, a mesa-like area, and the steep-sided
' cliffs and slopes which form the north can}•on wall above the North Fork
of the' Gunnison River.. Coal Gulch, an unnamed intermittent drainage
' (but known as "A Gulch"), and"Hawksnest Creek, are the principal tribu-
taries of the North Fork which drain the slopes in the project area.
The project area lies between 6600' and 8100' in elevation. The environmental
' context at each of the drill hole locations is given in Table 2.
No specific climatic data is available for the immediate project
' area. At the Paonia station, the average annual temperature falls
between the mid- to high - 40°F. range; annual precipitation averages
11" to 13" per year (Kranzush 1977). C limatic condition s. in the area
are generally moderate for a mountain valley, although killing frosts
' and rapid changes in weather conditions are not uncommon. Agriculture
is not possible anywhere in the immediate vicinity.
The geology of the area consists of Cretaceous an d. Upper Cretaceous
' sandstones and shales (Kranzush 1977). Mountain valley alluvium occurs
in the lower areas,
No soil survey information is available for this area, but soils in
the area are generally non-existent on rocky or cliffy terrain. On more
level areas ,accumulations.of.colluvial debris and residual weathering
of sandstone and shales -- under the additional influence of biotic
' conditions -- have produced soils that are light in color and sandy to
loamy in texture.

' 6
