No archaeo-
logical or. historic cultural. resources were found, and .no additional
investigations are needed. Archaeological clearance is recommended.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Western Slope .Carbon, Inc „ operators of the Hawk's Nest Coal Mine
near Somerset, Colorado, proposes to drill eleven degasification holes C~~~
in the NW; of Section 10 and the SW', of Section 3, fownshi~l3S, Range
90W. (Figu~ )_. Additionally, hei ~expl~ration holes are proposed for~~~
drilling in Section 1, and in the NE; of Section 12 and the NW; of
Section 3, Township 135, Range 90W. (Figures 1 and 2). The degasi-
fication holes, labeled DH'K' through DH'U', are situated on the south
and southwest facing slopes below Thousand Acre Flats, a steep-sided
mesa above the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Drill holes L, M, N,
and 0 will be located off an existing jeep trail -- Coal Bank Road. The
access to the remaining degasification holes will involve construction
of new roads or upgrading of existing trails. The exploration holes,
designated by the prefix "WSC", are situated on the southeast facing
slopes of Thousand Acre Flats, except for WSC-DH19 which lies north of
the degasification holes. With the exception.oF WSC-DH 19, the access to
the remaining exploration holes will require new road construction. At
each location, ground disturbance will be confined to the immediate
drill site -- a 100' radius around the drill hole. At the time of the
survey, the precise location of the drill holes could only be approxi-
mated to within 100'. Thus, a 200' radius around each drill hole location
was examined. A standard 200' right-of-way (ROW) was surveyed along
each of the proposed access roads: The locations of the proposed drill
holes and ROWS are given in Table 1.
Since the proposed construction will have an adverse impact on
potential archaeological or historic sites, a cultural resources inventory
was requested by Western Slope Carbon to inventory and .evaluate any
archaeological or historic properties of potential significance to the
National Register of Historic Places.
