' Previous surveys in the vicinity of the project area-did not locate
any prehistoric materials. One site, the Oliver Mine complex, has been
' nominated to the Nztional Register.
' INVENTORY METHODS
On 21 May 1981, a files search of sites previously located and
' recorded in the project area was made at the Colorado Preservation
Office. No previously recorded sites. and no previous surveys were
' indicated for the immediate project area.
A 200' radius around each drill hole location was intensively
examined for cultural remains. Indications of surface cultural materials
' viere sought in the form of scattered artifacts and occupational debris,
including any structural features. Subsurface cultural materials and
' features were sought in exposed road and stream cuts, and in animal
burrows. Spacing averaged between .5-10 meters. The access road right-
' of-ways were surveyed with multiple transects covering a total ROW of
200', or 100' to either side of the centerline. All areas of the project
location received equal attention. Special attention was given to areas
of higher site potential and visibility, such as edges of ponds, meadow/
wooded area edges, streamside locations, and open, level areas. Ground
visibility was poor (estimated less than 30°0). Previous disturbances to
the project area are confined to sheep grazing and mineral exploration.
' CULTURAL RESOl1RCES INVENTORY
' No cultural resources were found in the project area. The proposed
access road to WSC-DH16, as well as the areas surrounding WSC-DH 3A, 14,
' and the existing pad area are extensively grazed, but no structures were
found at these locations. A stock pond is located near WSC-DH 19, but
was not recorded.
RECOMMENDATIOPJS
' No cultural materials were found in the project area, and the
probability of unrecognized sites or buried cultural materials is slight.
' Archaeological clearance is recommended. If subsurface cultural materials
are found during construction, the BLM Montrose District Manager should
t 8 .
