serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis). Other important shrubs
• include Antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata), Squaw-apple
(Peraphvllum ramosissimum), and Green ephedra (Ephedra
viridis). Scattered pinon pine (Pinus edulis) and Utah
juniper (Junioerus utahensis) occur on the more xeric sites,
while scattered ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and Douglas
fir (Pseudotsuaa menziesii) occur on the more mesic sites.
Important species in the under story include bluegrass (Poa
SDD.), western wheatgrass (Aaropvron smithii), bottlebrush
squirreltail (Sitanion hvstrix), yucca (Yucca baccata), and
milkvetch (Astraoalus Spp.)•
The mesa tops within the existing leases. as well as the
proposed lease area have undergone various vegetation
treatments including chaining, burning, and herbicide
~ application. A grassland meadow dominated by wildrye (Elvmus
Spp.) has been established through seeding on a portion of the
mesa top.
WILDLIFE
The proposed lease area is diverse in wildlife habitats.
Although the proposed lease area is primarily composed of the
mountain shrub type vegetative community, large portions are
also covered by pinon-juniper and pasture types as well. The
occurrence of this relatively diverse vegetative structure
• provides habitats for a rich and abundant faunal component
such as big game species.
LAND USE AND TRANSPORTATION
The entire surface estate of the proposed lease area is in
private ownership, except for a reservation for ditches and
canals constructed under the authority of the United States
(see Map 3). The coal estate is the only mineral reserved to
the United States on all of the proposed lease area except for
the NE'/.SW'/. and NWi45E'/. of Section 6. The NE'kSW'/. and NWY.SE'/. of
Section 6 has coal and oil and gas reserved to the United
States.
The proposed lease area is utilized for livestock grazing.
Lawrence Huntington is indicated as the surface owner of Lots
1-4, the NE1/aSW'k and the NWY.SE'/.. Ronald Crawford, Norris
Crawford, Marc Crawford, John Crawford, Bonnie Patterson and
Patricia Moore are indicated as the surface owners of Lot 5.
There would be no change of the surface use if the lease were
issued.

8
