Due to the similar nature and close proximity of the proposals, they will be
analyzed in one Environmental Assessment report.
The operations are located on unpatented lode mining claims that produce amazonite
and smokey quartz. The proposed mining operations are located in the Crystal Creek
area approximately six miles north of Lake George, Colorado. See table and map for
specific claim locations. The operation involves three separate claimants. This project
is proposed to begin in the summer of 2006. The proposed operation could continue for
five years, at which point the operation may be extended for an additional five years
through a Forest Service approval of a modified plan of operations. The operator has
been approved to conduct crystal mining in this area since 1993.
The claimant's proposal includes:
• Hand tools and heavy equipment would be used to prospect and extract minerals
from the unpatented mining claims. Heavy equipment would be limited to up to
60 eight-hour days per season (May-November) for Glacier Peak and Crystal
Jack mining operations. See table for proposed disturbance size per operation.
• Individual open pits and/or trenches would be fenced or flagged for public and
wildlife safety.
• Vehicle travel would mostly be limited to existing system and non-system roads.
Motorized travel off existing roads would be restricted to a track hoe excavator to
access dig sites. In order to minimize disturbance, frequency of off-road travel
would be limited to start and finish of mechanical work.
• New road construction is requested for approximately one-half mile to access the
northern most claims and one-half mile to access Take-Five. Forest Service
preferred routes will be examined as alternatives in the report and mitigation
measures such as culverts and erosion control will be reviewed.
• Trees would only be removed when unavoidable for mining operations. The
Forest Service would be notified before claimant removes live trees larger than 8"
in diameter.
• All waste would be removed from the National Forest for disposal in an approved
facility in accordance with state and local regulations.
u4s L~
Caring for the Land and Serving People Printed on Recycled Paper
