1953 AEC REPORT <br />of workings on 18 levels over a vertical range of 1,400 ft. <br />below water level. Many workings above water level were <br />caved or inaccessible at the time of the AEC study. The No. <br />1 tunnel was caved 2,000 ft. from the portal. "A smoldering <br />fire has been burning near the heading of the No. 2 tunnel <br />since 1900. Bulkheads keep the fire from spreading, but <br />high temperatures and bad air prevented an examination of <br />workings further than 1,500 ft. from the portal of this <br />tunnel.i45 The Bureau of Mines attempted to reopen the No. <br />3 tunnel in 1947 but encountered difficult and costly <br />conditions and abandoned the effort. <br />Geologv, pp. 14-16. The only rocks exposed in accessible <br />workings [of the Smuggler mine) are the Devonian [Chaffee <br />Group) Dyer Dolomite, the Mississippian Leadville Dolomite <br />[with the now-separated Chaffee Group Gilman Sandstone at <br />its base], the Pennsylvanian weber [Belden] shale and <br />Limestone, and post-Pennsylvanian albite [aplite] porphyry." <br />The remainder of the geologic description is essentially as <br />is contained in the 1950 BUREAU oe MINES REPORT described <br />previously. <br />Uranium Occurrences, pp. 16-20. Spotty occurrences of <br />radioactive material were found in the accessible workings <br />of the Smuggler mine. Only one was thought to be of <br />possible economic value. All but one occurrence were in the <br />breccia along the Leadville-Weber [Belden] contact; the <br />exception was 800 ft. in from the No. 1 tunnel portal, where <br />stalagmites [stalactites?] of goslarite (a hydrous zinc <br />sulfate) encrusting dolomite walls and roof contained up to <br />1.278 U,OB. Elsewhere, spotty radioactive material was found <br />associated with galena, sphalerite, and silver in the <br />breccia matrix of dolomite and shale [breccia II], one such <br />location being the Irish stope. Two widely separated <br />samples contained 1.048 and 0.378 U,OB. <br />The most important occurrence was in the Kassick stope, a <br />winze located off the Anaconda crosscut 20 ft. from where <br />According to the HYMAN MEMOIRS 64, cited below, Part IV, post p. 65, <br />the fire started in 1897. According to Stefan Albouy (personal <br />communication), it probably started in the 5th, 6th, or 7th level off the <br />Smuggler shaft in the stopes against the Della No. 2 fault, see for <br />example STECEN REPORT, fig. 5. In spite of barricades the fire burned its <br />way up through the stopes and the carbonaceous beds of the Belden <br />Formation to and even above the No. 3 tunnel. Mr. Albouy states that <br />when he was young there were bare spots in the winter snow above the No. <br />3 tunnel, which no longer occur, suggesting that the fire was finally <br />extinguished. <br />For the most recent terminolo <br />gy, see generally the STECEN REPORT <br />below. <br />Bruce A.
