Stratigraphic Section <br />INTRODUCTION <br />A Generalized Stratigraphic Section prepared by this author <br />shows rocks exposed in the area of Smuggler mountain in general and <br />in the Smuggler mine in particular is included at the end of this <br />INTRODUCTION." Companion to the stratigraphic section is a Geologic <br />Time Scale, also prepared by this author, and included at the end <br />Of th15 INTRODUCTION. <br />The Generalized Stratigraphic Section is not intended to <br />represent a measured section or particular location. There is no <br />scale. In fact rock unit thicknesses can change rapidly, <br />especially the thicknesses of the Leadville Limestone and the <br />overlying Belden Formation. There are drastic variations in the <br />thickness of the Leadville due to a number of different limestone <br />weathering periods between the formation of the Leadville and the <br />deposition of the Belden over its karst topographic surface. The <br />thickness of the Belden thus varies inversely with that of the <br />Leadville, being thicker where significant Leadville has been <br />eroded and vice versa. ' <br />The Generalized Stratigraphic Section also represents the <br />post-Precambrian rocks of Smuggler mountain as they were deposited, <br />that is essentially horizontally, illustrated variations being the <br />undulating Leadville-Belden contact resulting from erosion of the <br />Leadville as discussed above, the intrusion of the Aspen mountain <br />sill and its associated feeder dikes, and the deposition of the <br />Quaternary glacial and other deposits on the eroded Belden bedrock <br />surface. As now present in Smuggler mountain, all of the rock <br />units shown (except for the Quaternary deposits) have been folded <br />and dip to the northwest from 30° to as steep as 80°. Faulting and <br />other structural features are also not shown on this generalized <br />stratigraphic section. <br />The profile of the Generalized Stratigraphic Section <br />represents the general resistance of the various rock types to <br />erosion. It is not intended to portray specific topography. In <br />the immediate area of the Smuggler mine the surface expression of <br />the rocks shown in the stratigraphic section is covered by a veneer <br />of glacial drift and recent alluvial and colluvial gravels. <br />Thickness of the gravel cover varies greatly, from none in the <br />Descriptions and thicknesses used in the Generalized Stratigraphic <br />Section were derived primarily from R.
