(see attached letter dated October 4, 1990) The report,
prepared by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants Inc., with Ronald
Rood as its author, documents the results of a 500 acre
archaeological survey conducted on lands to be included in a
proposed expansion to the Seneca II-W Mine.
The Metcalf survey recorded a single isolated find (5RT709) and
reevaluated a site (5RT118) previously recorded that may be
impacted by mining in the expansion area. Site 5RT118 was
originally recorded in 1979 by Gorden and Kranzush, who reported
a rock art panel consisting of three anthropomorphic figures. The
reevaluation of the site by the Metcalf survey team located a
scattering of firecracker rock and a potential hearth feature below
the rock art panel.
According to Peabody, site 5RT118 is situated on the edge of the
proposed permit boundary across a drainage from a proposed haul
road. It does not appear that construction of the haul road will
impact the site. However, Peabody indicates that blasting will be
conducted within 2,000 feet of the site.
The Metcalf report recommends that isolated find 5RT709, a single
biface, is not eligible for nomination to the National Register of
Historic Places, while site 5RT118 should be considered potentially
eligible for nomination under criteria "D". The report goes on to
recommend that 5RT118 be tested and the rock art be fully
documented, then if needed, a mitigation plan implemented.
Peabody has indicated its willingness to document the rock art
panels using photography and drawings in the unlikely event that
blasting might damage the rock art. It also will post disturbance
boundary signs around the site to assure protection of the site
during the construction of the haul road. These activities will be
completed prior to commencement of construction or blasting.
