,., ..~.
,.
Henry Barbe -2- January 17, 1983
- 4) A wider range of soil depths should be tested on the research plots.
The Division suggests depths of 6, 12, and 24 inches. From this data,
the cove.' and productivity for 18 inches of topsoil can be inferred.
5) Powderhorn has proposed no statistical comparison between test plot
data and the revegetation success standards. With the proposed design,
there is no way to evaluate whether a given depth of topsoil is adequate .
when compared to the natural community.
6) 1t should be noted that if phosphorus is deficient, this fertilizer
must be incorporated into the topsoil prior to seeding.
7) Seeding at Powderhorn in September may be too early. Seeding during the
last week in October or first week in November would be preferable.
8) Please clarify why the field trials plots are to be mulched at 1.5 tons/
acre and the rest of the refuse pile at 1.0. For purposes of controlling
soil moisture loss, 1.5 tons/acre is optional.
A meeting may be in order to discuss the above comments. Hopefully, we
can reach a tentative agreement during my next inspection at Roadside and
Cameo.
As always, please call if you have any questions.
incerely,
~.lin Herron
Re lamation Specialist
JH/mab
