STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
DATE: February 18, 1987
T0: Steve Renner
FROM: Peter O'Connor~~
RE: SENECA II MINE PROPOSED 1987 SEED MIX; PERMIT N0. C-80-005
You recently requested me to review the February 5, 1987 letter from Peabody
Coal Company (PCC). This letter was submitted in response to Stipulation No.
3 of the December 31, 1986 Findings Document. This stipulation requires PCC
to submit a listing of the proposed seed mixtures annually for Division review
and approval. This February 5, 1987 letter represents the seed mixture
proposed for 1987.
Peabody is proposing to reclaim "as many as 130 acres" in 1987 utilizing one
seed mixture: "Seed Mix No. 1 -Southern Exposures and Drier Sites". The
1987 proposed seed mixture mirrors the mixture on page 13-12 of the permit
application document with the addition of six additional species. Of these
six additional species, four are listed on pages 13-14 to -16 as species that
would be used if commercially available. The other two species, Northern
Sweetvetch (Hed s~ar~u~m boreale) and Purple coneflower (Echinacea eu-r urea), are
not listed in ~ e ermlt pTication document but are a r~ssed e
A. Northern sweetvetch - Forb species native to the area that is
leguminous and should provide good forage for the intended final
land use of rangeland and wildlife habitat.
Purple coneflower - A forb species not readily identified in any of
my vegetation references but found in one of Mike Savage's
references. A telephone conversation with Vern Pfannenstiel today
revealed PCC has previously planted this native forb species at
Seneca II with good success, even though Mr. Savage's reference
specifies this species is adapted to central - eastern United States.
In conjunction with seeding the above referenced Seed Mix No. 1, PCC proposes
to seed 65 acres with Fourwing saltbush (Arta~~lex canescens) and Corrimon
chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) for "concentrate s rTu6-planting areas".
The proposed 1987 seed mix is consistent with the seed mix in the permit
application document and, according to PCC, consistent with past seed
mixtures. I would recommend Division approval of this proposed seed mix for
the 1987 planting at the Seneca II Mine.
/vj r
cc: Mike Savage
7559E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
