In 1994, the five most prevalent species accounted for
75.6% of the relative cover. In 1995, the five most prevalent species accounted for 82.8%
of the relative cover. The following table identifies those five and their relative cover.
Species 1994 1995
Astragalus titer (ricer milkvetch) 26.1 28.9
Bromus inermrs (smooth brome) 22.7 23.4
Festuca ovina (sheep fescue) 11.1 14.4
Agropyron dasystachum (thickspike wheatgrass) 8.0 10.8
Agropyron smithii (western wheatgrass) 0.0 5.3
Agropyron tricophorum (pubescent wheatgrass) 7.7 0.0
TOTALS 75.6 82.8
The five most prevalent species accounted for more than the maximum 75% of relative
cover discussed in the Meadows permit in 1994 and 1995. The difference in 1994 was
probably not statistically significant. The difference in 1995 does not appear to be of any
significance in terms of the ability of the reclaimed land to support the post-mine land
uses of grazing and wildlife habitat. The six species listed above represent five perennial
grasses (three native and two introduced species), and one introduced forb. Eleven
species of grasses were encountered by sampling transects in 1994 while fifteen grasses
were encountered during 1995 sampling. These grasses accounted for 68.7 and 62.8
percent of relative cover in 1994 and 1995, respectively.
Meadows No. 1 Mine 6 Phase 111 Bond Releau
