Pa hlke and h1r. Herron:
The purpose of this letter is to review the major points of our meeting of
July 25, 1980, concerning the upcoming vegetation reference areas study
at the Hayden Gulch mine. As I indicated in our meeting, I want to
document the study requirerents that we discussed so that criteria for
successfully completing the work are clearly understood. If you are in
agreement with the follov~ing summary of our meeting, I would ask you to
sign the enclosed copy of this letter and return it to me. If there
are some areas of disagreement, please contact me immediately.
I indicated that reference areas would be established for eaciilnajor
vegetation type on the mine plan area. These include aspen, oak brush
and mountain shrub type vegetation. It may be necessary to subdivide the
mountain shrub type into more than one vegetation type to achieve
sample adequacy requirements. This subdivision might result in recognition
of conmlunities on a basis other than solely the dominant vegetation. For
instance a high cover, production, density community might be recognised
versus a low cover, production, density coml:lunity. These two communities
might have many species in common. You felt this aparoach would be satis-
factory if some supportive evidence could be provided as to the basis
for grouping the mountain shrub data into more than one community
classification. I felt the data could be used to "point the way" toward
the most logical community groupings.
Reference areas will be chosen so as
ties on the mine plan area. A total
established for each reference area.
be used as part of a reference area.
H-G Coal Company will be considered
to be Quite similar to the communi-
of at least three acres will be
ilo site smaller than one acre will
Only land surface controlled by
for reference area use.
h~
