December 29, 1981
DtC 2 ~ i981
Mined Land Reclamation
Colorado Department of
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Division
Natural Resources
Gentlemen:
III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

fJiiN~D LAtiD R~CLAi~hA I ION
Colo. Dept. of `!atural P.cso.!rce~
This letter is to provide requested information regarding consumptive
use of tributary ground water at the Coors Keenesburg Coal Mine, Weld
County, Colorado. This information and proposed replacement program is
being submitted pursuant to the terms of the Mined Land Reclamation Board
Mining Permit C-028-81 issued on November 3, 1981.
We have determined that up to 75.5 of of consumptive use will occur
from tributary sources during the first year of mine life. In subsequent
years the consumptive use should decrease to about 35.5 of annually. Con-
versely, Coors will be returning about 25.4 of annually to the South Platte
River system by virtue of irrigation application to reclamation parcels.
Consequently, the net depletion to the stream system will be about 50.1 of
and 10.1 af, respectively, during the initial year of mining and subsequent
years.
I propose to replace the estimated depletions by joining the Colorado
State Engineer sanctioned augmentation plan operated by the Ground Water
Appropriators of the South Platte, Inc. (GASP). GASP indicates that Coors
may contract with that organization for replacement of Keenesburg Mine
depletions. The appropriate contract documents have been submitted to
GASP and copies are attached.
During the first year of the mine life, the initial pits will intercept
about 70 af, an amount estimated by Dr. Dave McWorter of Colorado State
University in studies conducted for Coors preparatory to the permitting.
According to McWorter, inflows should diminish after the first year to
about 30 af.
~ i
