CHAPTERFIVE Draft EIS Recisions
• TDS concentrations measured in well 20-1 at the Dissolution Surface range from 3,612 to 70,076
mg/l with a mean of 51 900 mg/l. Mean concentrations of sodium (16,700 mg/I), potassium (114
mg/1~ chloride (11,500 mg/1), and fluoride (30.3 mg/1) are much higher than those for the
alluvium and Upper Aquifer at the site. Mean concentrations of chloride (11,500 mg/1), fluoride
(30.3 mg/I) nitrate and nitrite (18.6 mg/1), azsenic (0.06 mg/1), beryllium (0.01 mg/I), chromium
(0.77 mg/1), iron (6.71 mg/1), lead (0.23 mg/1), lithium (8.53 mg/1), and manganese (0.06 mg/l)
exceed Colorado groundwater standazds. All results for nitrite were non-detect at elevated
detection limits. Based on the EPA method of calculating means, the mean concentration for
nitrite (11.5 mg/1) exceeds the standazd. Other parameters that exceed the standards for well 20-1
aze sulfate in 4 of 18 samples, nickel in 1 of 17 samples, and zinc in 4 of 17 samples.
Water quality information for the Lower Aquifer from WRN operations is summarized in Table
3.4-4. TDS values at the B-Groove range from 780 to 1,484 mg/I, whereas those at the
Dissolution Surface range from 1,708 to 27,670 mg/1 at the WRN site, about 2 miles west of the
Piceance Site.
Concentrations of the other constituents reported for the WRN Lower Aquifer wells aze generally
lower than those for the American Soda samples. However, the data provided by WRN includes
zeros for the minimum values for many analytes instead of recording them as less than the
applicable detection limit. This has the effect of biasing the mean concentrations lower. Mean
concentrations for the American Soda data were determined by using one-half the detection limit
for all non-detect analyses.

wells completed in the Lower Aquifer from the USGS
uized in Table 3.4-3. TDS concentrations for these
from 611
to 2,180 mg/I. Mean concentrations of sulfate (355 mgft), fluoride (7.92 mgfl), and TDS (1,140
mg/l) exceed Colorado groundwater standazds. However, the depth or screened interval that was
monitored by these wells is not known.
3.4.2.2 Pipeline Corridor
The project pipelines (product and water return lines) would be routed along an approximately
44-mile-long corridor, much of which parallels existing pipeline rights-of--way. The pipelines
. would traverse a variety of surficial geologic materials including alluvium, colluvium, and
bedrock. The pipelines would be buried approximately three feet below grade.
