E
S comcomwnr Seneca Coal Company
September 24, 2007
Mr. Mike Boulay
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
101 South 3~. Suite 301
Grand Junction, CO 81501
(970) 242-5025
13E: Seneca II Mine Acreage Review/Reconciliation
Mr. Boulay,
During the last Seneca II inspection, it was brought to SCC's attention that there was a discrepancy in the total ages
permitted for disturbance anti the disturbed acreage reported in the 2006 Annual Reclamation Report. SCC has
researched the issue and has the following explanation fox the discrepancy:
During the course of Permit Renewa104 (approved February 17, 2002) the disturbed acreage for Seneca II was updated
to reflect 2,128 acres permitted for disturbance.
Starting in 2005, SCC began to revise and reconcile acreages Eot the various Seneca operations. The East effort for
Seneca II resulted in 2,299.3 acres being reported as disturbed. However, this included 316.3 acres of Pre-Law
disturbance. Therefore;
2,299.3 (reported in 2005 ARR) .~
- 316.3 (Pre-law azea)
1,979.0 disturbed acres
In 2007, SCC has further refined the disturbed azea by reviewing and updating the undisturbed azeas within the overall
disturbed area boundary. This resulted in a reduction of 4.0 acres in the disturbance area. Therefore;
1,979.0 acres
4.0 acres
1,975.0 actual disturbed aces
The actual disturbed acres are 153 acres less than the 2,128 acres approved Eor disturbance. In summary, the
inadvertent reporting of the Pre-Law acres has caused the confusion and there are no exceedence's to the permitted
disturbance acreage.
SCC will correct the acreages (with explanation) in the 2007 Annual Reclamation Report submittal.
