Mr. Fred Banta
August 29, 1989
Page 4
consideration might be given to listing the larger, more
important chemical manufacturers in order to provide
another source the operator may use far assistance. This
list would be for information only, not an endorsement of
any single manufacturer.
Peabody currently has an approved weed control plan that
encompasses many of the considerations present in this
section. It is Peabody's opinion that continued
mechanical tillage may not be practical or very efrective
in surface mining areas. Therefore, herbicides will
probably be the control method of choice because of
effectiveness, flexibility, and easier application as a
control measure. Does the Division anticipate any water
quality ramifications to the operators because of the
likely increased use of chemical herbicides in these weed
control operations? Has there been any coordination with
other agencies such as the Colorado Department of Health
about the potential increased used of chemicals at these
surface mines?
The above comments address Peabody's concerns or point out
certain items that the Division might further consider in
formulating the final policy. Please feel free to contact
this office if you would like to further discuss any of
the above comments or other areas of the proposed weed
control policy memorandum.
Sincerely,
~~ti ~~
Vern Pf nnenstiel
Senior
Environmental Scientist
kjs
