Mr. Glen Golden, Civil Engineer -3- April 4, 1996
Office of Surface Mining
Significant future subsidence damage is not anticipated at this time. If signi£cant subsidence-
related problems occur in the future, then we will assess available funds and appropriate repair
options.
To the best of our knowledge, the specific referenced repair work on Mr. Walsh's land has not
occurred. Our staff will assess the situation and ensure that any work is done with the
appropriate notice to the landowner.
In the response to question 2.04.10 on page IOc, the mine operator indicated that the target
density for shrubs on the reclaimed land would be IS00 to 2000 shrubs per acre. In contrast,
page 14C (revised 10/95) states that "There will be no woody plant density standard. " Has the
landowner approved the elimination of the revegetation standard?
The landowner, Bazbara Stra[rnan, indicated her approval of the woody plant standadd
elimination by letter dated October 9, 1995.
Permit Section 2.05.4(2) (A) (b), page 13, indicates that all manmade structures other than the
sedimentation pond will be removed from the site. Despite this statement, it appears that a road
and powerlines will be retained as postmining features. It is not apparent that these manmade
features will support the postmining land uses, i. e., grazing and wildlife habitat. Has the land-
owner agreed to retention of the road and powerlines?
Following a meeting among Division staff, the landowner (Ms. Stratman), and a representative
of the Gunnison County Road and Bridge Department, it was determined that all roads at the
site, beginning at the location where the road currently splits to each of the benches, will be
reclaimed. This was verified by a letter dated October 20, 1995, from the Division to
Ms. Stratman. The remaining road is a county road, which will continue to be maintained by
the county.
It is our intent to facilitate the removal of four power poles, the associated lines and transformer
from the mine site. The appropriate power company will be contacted to assist in the removal.
Thank you for your assistance, and we look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
David A. Berry
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
DAB/bjw
c: James McArdle, DMG
Susan McCannon, DMG
~91W~ODIDF7I.DAB
